– ABOUT THE PROJECT
Based in the UK, fine art photographer Darren Nisbett travels throughout Europe to capture enigmatic scenes of abandoned buildings and industrial structures that he finds queerly compelling, like stumbling upon a relic covered in dirt that is still resonant with power and mystery. Darren’s stories of his time spent in Pripyat – the Ukrainian town near Chernobyl that was mass abandoned following the 1986 nuclear reactor disaster – are riveting. And oddly hopeful as wildlife and the organic world take over this once bustling town.
“ Still for all his range and roving, Nisbett’s photographs are personal as much as archival. Lyrical psychodramas that let him eulogize loss and celebrate the stubborn endurance of memory. In these empty rooms and long lost chairs the full frame of a life once fit. Something of their inner mystery remains and Nisbett sensitively imparts that value into his images. Nature will claim everything back in the end but for this captured moment, these places still have cultural significance and metaphorical depth. In Nisbett’s ‘Fire and Ice’, taken in a once regal country home on a cold December day, his camera and our perspective looks down the long corridor – now completely empty and grey and broken – toward the blue winter light that still blooms like a spectral force, an incarnation. at the distant end of the passageway where the door is open and nature is moving in. “
