Canadian artist Carylann Loeppky creatively proves how figurative art inspired by such classic painters as Jean-Honore Fragonard and Jean-Paul Sargeant can speak to a modern audience with a contemporary sense of mystery, beauty and individuality. “Mixed media artist Carylann Loeppky creates eccentric and enchanting figurative portraits – mostly young females in elaborate finery and other ornamentations. Loeppky’s ‘characters’ have a classic manner though they are often decked out in a gothic steampunk style. Loeppky, impressed by 17th and 18th century French court painters as well as the queer beauty of surrealism, is keenly attentive to the mood and mystery in a suggestively struck pose. Her work has been described as “macabre fairy tales” – darkly gorgeous spellbound scenes of high-glam partygoers living on the edge of this new age of decadence.”
